This is the underpainting I started last year for the Meeker Sheepdog Art Contest. Yesterday I started adding color. Today I worked on the dog some more but wiped out everything I did on the sheep. I'll try again another day.
March 12 - Added two more photo as I'm working on the sheep. I keep going back and forth on the relative values of the light and dark. Seems to work better with more contrast but it's getting to be a very dark painting. I also go back and forth on how much in focus the sheep should be. Right now the middle sheep is in sharper focus with the ones on the sides less so With the focus on the eyes above I'm thinking of softening all the sheep features.....time for a walk.
May 1 - Final piece after darkening the dog in the background.

Gay,
I love what you are doing. I have a question about the blue eye and wonder what it would look like brown.
I've been contemplating that also - it would certainly be a more balanced painting. I think I've resisted because I've always been so attracted to one blue eye one brown eyed dogs! I think I'm going to finish the rest of the painting and then decide what to do. We'll see....
Gay, It is so dramatic! Really wonderful! I understand what Elizabeth said...wondering about the blue eye. Those dogs are so strange and unique BECAUSE of that blue eye thing. I think I'd leave it.
